How to Configure a Sex Doll: The Complete Options Landscape

Every vendor calls it something different. Here's how to cut through the naming confusion and understand what you're actually buying.

How to Use This Guide

Vendor websites are overwhelming. They'll show you twenty checkbox options with names like "RST," "Ultra Dream," "SLE," "EVO," "Gear Skeleton" — and expect you to know what matters.

Here's the thing: most of those options are the same across manufacturers. The names change, the branding changes, but the underlying features don't. Once you learn what the options actually are, you can configure any vendor's site with confidence.

This guide covers the standard options you'll see across most manufacturers. For the technical science behind materials, read [A Complete Guide to Doll Materials](/guides/doll-materials-guide). For my personal choices and why I made them, read [How I Built My First Doll](/guides/how-i-built-my-first-doll).

Material: The Foundation Decision

Every doll starts here. This is the single biggest fork in the road.

TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer)

Also called: TPR, "soft skin," "jelly material" (avoid the latter — marketing nonsense)

  • Feel: Very soft, very jiggly
  • Maintenance: High — porous, absorbs fluids, needs powdering after every wash, oil seepage over time
  • Lifespan: 2–4 years with good care
  • Price: $1,200–$2,000 full doll

Bottom line: Budget-friendly but maintenance-heavy. Fine for first-timers who want to test the waters cheaply. Most owners upgrade to silicone eventually.

Standard Silicone

Also called: Platinum silicone, medical-grade silicone, "solid silicone"

  • Feel: Firmer, more solid, less give
  • Maintenance: Minimal — wash with soap and water, occasional light oiling
  • Lifespan: 5–10+ years
  • Price: $2,000–$3,500

Bottom line: The safe default. If you want low maintenance and long-term durability, start here.

Ultra-Soft Silicone

Also called: "Soft silicone," "super soft," "gel touch," "ultra dream" (MMX branding), "RST" (TOP-CYDOLL branding)

  • Feel: Soft compressible zones (breasts, butt, thighs) over firm core
  • Maintenance: Slightly more than standard silicone — light oiling of soft zones
  • Lifespan: Same as standard silicone
  • Price: Usually +$300–$800, sometimes free as promotion

Bottom line: The sweet spot for bed use. If you're buying for cuddling, sleeping, or intimacy, this is worth the upgrade. [Full material breakdown here.](/guides/doll-materials-guide)

SLE (Silicone-Like Elastomer)

Brands using it: Starpery, some budget manufacturers

  • Feel: Variable — some formulas soft, some firm
  • Maintenance: Unknown long-term
  • Lifespan: Unproven — no 3–5 year owner data yet
  • Price: $1,500–$2,500

Bottom line: Skip it. Not proven. Go TPE if budget-constrained, go true silicone if you want reliability.

Weight Reduction

Also called: "Lightweight," "weight loss," "hollow," "foam core," "super weight reduction" (MMX Ultra Dream)

What it does: Replaces some solid silicone mass with lighter filler. - Standard full silicone doll: 45–55kg (100–120 lb) - Weight-reduced: 28–38kg (60–85 lb)

Why it matters: At 3 AM, repositioning a limp body, every kilogram counts. Owners consistently rank weight as one of the biggest surprises — and frustrations.

Caveat: Early weight reduction (2020–2022 era) used hard foam cores that felt brick-like under soft silicone. Modern implementations solved this.

Verdict: Almost always get it. The only reason to skip is if you specifically want maximum weight for stability (photography, standing displays).

Skeleton Types

Standard Skeleton

Basic jointed metal frame. Arms and legs bend at standard points. Fine for basic posing, limited range of motion.

EVO / Shrug Skeleton

Also called: "Shrug skeleton," "enhanced skeleton," "advanced skeleton," "yoga skeleton"

Adds: - Shrugging shoulders (raise toward ears) - Enhanced spine articulation - Improved hip rotation

Verdict: Usually free. Get it. The shrug makes a visible difference in how natural the doll looks lying down.

Gear-Joint Skeleton

Also called: "Gear skeleton," "precision skeleton"

Uses gear-style joints instead of friction joints. Claims smoother movement and better position-holding. Still early — not enough long-term durability data.

Verdict: Nice if available, not worth paying extra for yet.

Body Options

Gel Breasts

Also called: "Soft breasts," "jelly breasts," "hollow breasts," "gel-filled"

Breast cavities filled with soft gel instead of solid silicone. Much softer, more realistic compression.

Trade-off: Gel can migrate or settle over time, creating unevenness. Quality varies by manufacturer.

Verdict: Get if breast realism matters. Skip if prioritizing longevity over feel.

Gel Butt

Also called: "Soft butt," "gel ass," "jelly butt"

Same concept for buttocks.

Verdict: Nice-to-have, lower priority than gel breasts.

Soft vs Hard Hands

Also called: "Relaxed hands" (soft), "Poseable hands" (hard), "Structured fingers"

  • Soft hands: Bend and grip loosely. Look more natural in bed.
  • Hard hands: Rigid with wire support. Better for posed photography.

Some manufacturers let you choose per hand.

Verdict: Hard if you want photos. Soft if you want realism in bed. Mixed if you can choose per hand.

Articulated Fingers

Also called: "Jointed fingers," "posable fingers," "wire fingers," "skeleton fingers"

Individual wire joints in each finger. The upgrade from standard wire-only fingers is massive.

Verdict: Get this. Non-negotiable for most owners.

Wired Toes

Also called: "Articulated toes," "jointed toes"

Individual wire joints in toes.

Verdict: Low priority. Get if free, skip if paid.

Head Options

Hard Silicone Head

Also called: "Fixed head," "solid head," "silicone head," "non-ROS"

Solid, non-removable silicone head. Maximum facial detail. No oral function.

Best for: Visual realism, photography, sleeping/cuddling.

ROS Head (Real Oral Simulation)

Also called: "Oral head," "open mouth," "movable mouth," "removable mouth"

Head with flexible mouth opening and internal cavity. Enables oral sex. Slightly less facial detail.

Reality check: ROS quality varies wildly by brand. Always check owner reviews.

Best for: Owners who want oral functionality.

Dual Heads

Some vendors offer two heads with the same body — one hard, one ROS.

Verdict: Premium option. Get it if both visual realism and oral function matter.

Feet Options

Standing Feet (with bolts)

Also called: "Standing feet," "bolt feet," "reinforced feet"

Threaded bolts protrude from soles. Doll can stand independently.

Verdict: Essential if you want standing poses. Bolts are visible in photos.

Hard Feet / Standing Without Bolts

Also called: "Flat feet," "standing feet no bolts"

Reinforced feet that stand without visible bolts. Less floor damage, cleaner look.

Verdict: Better option if available.

Standard Feet

Also called: "Regular feet," "normal feet," "soft feet"

No reinforcement. Cannot stand.

Verdict: Skip unless you never want to stand the doll.

Painting & Texture

Hyper-Realism Body Painting

Also called: "Realistic painting," "vein painting," "body blushing," "detail painting"

Factory-applied detail work: veins, skin tone variation, freckles, blushing at joints.

Verdict: Worth it. The difference between default and painted is dramatic in person.

Full Body Skin Texture

Also called: "Skin texture," "pores," "micro-detail," "real skin texture" (RST on TOP-CYDOLL)

Textured surface mimicking human skin pores across entire body.

Verdict: Get if available. More important for photography than bed use.

Matte Finish

Also called: "Matte head," "matte body," "non-shiny," "skin finish"

Reduces silicone's natural slight sheen.

Verdict: Get it. The shine is noticeable. Matte looks significantly more realistic.

Implanted Features

Implanted Hair

Also called: "Rooted hair," "real hair," "permanent hair"

Synthetic strands individually rooted into scalp. More realistic than wigs. Permanent style.

Verdict: Hard silicone heads handle it well. ROS heads with softer silicone may shed more. Consider one implanted + one wig if doing dual heads.

Implanted Eyebrows / Eyelashes

Also called: "Rooted brows," "real lashes," "permanent eyebrows"

Factory-rooted instead of painted/glued.

Verdict: Usually free or cheap. Worth it. Big visual payoff.

Other Options You'll See

Pubic Hair

Also called: "Public hair" (common typo), "genital hair," "trimmed," "landing strip"

Verdict: Personal preference. Usually free. Skip if you prefer clean.

Fixed vs Removable Vagina

Also called: "Built-in," "insert," "detachable," "removable tunnel"

  • Fixed: More realistic look, harder to clean.
  • Removable: Easier maintenance, less realistic appearance.

Verdict: Fixed for realism. Removable if you prioritize easy cleaning.

Heating Systems

Also called: "Body heater," "internal heating," "warm doll"

Electric heating elements.

Verdict: Mixed reviews. Can be finicky. Most owners skip and use electric blankets.

Sound / Moaning Systems

Also called: "Voice box," "moaning," "interactive sound," "AI voice"

Pre-recorded or triggered sounds.

Verdict: Gimmicky. Most owners turn it off after novelty wears off. Skip it.

How to Read Vendor Configuration Pages

Step 1: Identify the manufacturer, not the vendor

Vendor sites rebrand manufacturer options. "Ultra Dream" on RosemaryDoll is MMX's branding. "RST" is TOP-CYDOLL's. Learn the manufacturer terms, then map vendor names to them.

Step 2: Separate free upgrades from paid options

Most vendors bundle common options as "free upgrades." Don't let a vendor pretend they're doing you a favor.

Step 3: Identify your non-negotiables

Maybe five options actually matter for your use case. My framework: - Notice every time: Material feel, weight, breast softness, finger posing - Notice sometimes: Skin texture, painting, standing capability - Notice rarely: Toe joints, hand type, pubic hair, sound systems

Step 4: Check what's actually included vs. "available"

Some vendors list options as "available" but they're paid add-ons. Read carefully.

Step 5: Factory photos before shipping

Any reputable vendor sends factory photos for approval before shipping. If they don't, that's a red flag.

Manufacturer-Specific Naming Cheat Sheet

| What It Is | TOP-CYDOLL | MMX | Irontech | Real Lady | Common Vendor Names | |-----------|-----------|-----|----------|-----------|---------------------| | Ultra-soft silicone | RST / Ultra-soft | Ultra Dream | Soft silicone | Soft touch | "Soft skin," "gel touch" | | Weight reduction | Weight reduction | Super weight reduction | Lightweight | Hollow | "Lightweight," "foam core" | | Gel breasts | Gel breasts | Gel breasts | Soft breasts | Jelly breasts | "Soft breasts," "hollow" | | EVO skeleton | EVO | EVO / Shrug | EVO | Advanced | "Enhanced," "yoga" | | Standing no bolts | Hard feet | Hard feet | Standing feet | Flat feet | "Standing no bolts" | | Full body texture | RST | Full Body Skin Texture | Skin texture | Real skin | "Texture," "pores" |

The "Good Enough" Configuration

  • Material: Silicone (standard or ultra-soft if budget allows)
  • Weight reduction: Yes
  • Skeleton: EVO/shrug
  • Breasts: Gel
  • Fingers: Articulated
  • Feet: Standing (hard/no bolts if available)
  • Painting: Hyper-realism + matte finish
  • Head: Hard silicone (or ROS if oral matters)
  • Hair/Brows/Lashes: Implanted

That configuration lands around $2,300–$2,800 at most vendors.

Red Flags on Vendor Sites

  • No factory photo approval process
  • "AI-generated" or overly perfect product photos (seams edited out)
  • Options with made-up names that don't map to manufacturer terms
  • Heating/sound systems pushed as premium upgrades (usually gimmicks)
  • TPE marketed as "medical grade" (it's not — silicone is)
  • No parameter images or measurement sheets
